Donate Stock, Bonds, or Mutual Funds

Donating appreciated securities is a wonderful way to support STEM education for all students in Washington state and receive tax benefits at the same time.

To make a gift of stock:

  • Notify your broker that you wish to give stock to Washington STEM.
  • Let us know that you have initiated a transfer of stock to Washington STEM by contacting us at finance@washingtonstem.org or (206) 658-4320. Provide your name and contact information so that we can provide you with a tax receipt and acknowledge you for your gift.
  • Our gift acknowledgement will describe the property that was donated and for your convenience include the high, low, or average value per share at the time we receive the securities in our brokerage account. Donors are encouraged to seek advice from a tax adviser for the tax-deductible amount of the gift.

To make a gift of bonds: This is very similar to giving a gift of stock. Please contact finance@washingtonstem.org or (206) 658-4320 to learn more.

To make a gift of mutual funds: The transfer of mutual funds generally takes longer than that of stock and/or bonds. Please contact finance@washingtonstem.org or (206) 658-4320 to learn more.

Donate via Donor Advised Funds

A Donor Advised Fund is an account that may be established directly with a sponsoring non-profit organization, community foundation, or financial institution. A donor advised fund is a designated 501(c)(3) public charity. Contributions to those fund are tax deductible. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to Washington STEM or other charities.

Contact your financial adviser, legal adviser, or specific donor advised fund representative for detailed information on donor advised funds. If you’d like support on making a gift to Washington STEM through your donor advised fund, please contact us at donate@washingtonstem.org or 206.658.4320

Donate via Employee Giving and Matching Gifts Programs

One of the easiest ways to increase your gift to Washington STEM is through your employer’s matching gift program. Thousands of companies, including corporations, foundations, not-for-profit organizations, and associations, match their employees’ charitable contributions—sometimes for as much as double the amount of the initial gift.

Companies have various methods for matching gift request submissions: online forms, automated phone systems, or a paper form that you submit to Washington STEM. Many companies will match personal gifts, such as cash, stocks, marketable securities, and the value of your volunteer time. Companies may also match gifts from employee spouses, retirees, and board members. Ask your supervisor or HR representative at your company for information on matching gifts. Bequests and Planned Gifts

Leave a legacy. Please remember Washington STEM in your will. All it takes is a quick phone call to your attorney to add a charitable gift to your will. If you’ve already included Washington STEM in your will please let us know so that we can acknowledge your intent.

Another easy way to make a planned gift is to designate Washington STEM as a retirement fund beneficiary. You can also see your generosity in action today. If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit Washington STEM and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money.

The law no longer has an expiration date so you are free to make annual gifts to our organization this year and well into the future. Donors are encouraged to seek advice from a tax adviser for more information on making gifts from an IRA.
