  • Project Title
Mount St. Helens Ecological Research Experience for High Schools
  • Project Description
    High School | 50% Poverty | 35% Minority

This project will partner students from four school districts with scientists from Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Pacific Northwest Research Station, and WSU-Vancouver to investigate ecological restoration on the slopes of Mount St. Helens. Together, they will gather data using a variety of field research techniques and tools. These data will be shared across multiple schools to guide and complement in-class studies. Teacher training is provided in advance of the field trip with curriculum to be used throughout the year. At year-end, students will analyze their data and present their findings at a research summit. These experiences will strengthen students' STEM identity, provide them with higher-order thinking strategies, and establish lasting relationships between classrooms and STEM professionals.

Funding from Washington STEM has been integral to the growth of the Mount St. Helens Institute's science education activities, allowing us to expand a high school program across four schools in southwest Washington. We are excited about the adventures and learning opportunities that this next year will hold for the 100+ students we'll now be able to reach. - Raymond Yurkewycz, Science Education Coordinator for the Mount St. Helens Institute
