Chief Development Officer

Alex Johnston serves as Washington STEM’s Chief Development Officer, leading the organization’s resource development efforts. She is personally invested in improving and increasing access to STEM education as she sees great potential for the number of lives that will be changed and the economic impact to both our state and country. She also wonders what path her life might have taken if, as a young girl who excelled in math and science, she had been encouraged to pursue those paths by a more inclusive and innovative education system.

Alex brings 15 years of experience in fundraising operations, with a strong background in management, board development, strategic planning, and institutional and individual giving. She is passionate about her profession, dedicated to making a difference in the community, and has a strong personal commitment to helping donors have an impact on the issues they care about most. Most recently she served as the Northwest Director of Philanthropy for The Trust for Public Land, leading all fundraising activities in the region, managing board activities, and working collaboratively to achieve statewide goals. She also has a deep background with youth servicing and education organizations; she has previously held leadership roles at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska, Pacific Northern Academy, and Robert Morris College.

Alex recently returned from an extended trip exploring the world from Asia to the Sahara Desert. She grew up in Alaska and moved to Seattle with her husband, Tony, in 2006. In her spare time she enjoys gardening, keeping bees, hiking, kayaking, fishing, traveling, and serving as a youth mentor.
